That old saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is so wrong. Case in point, my 17 year old Bichon frise can't go up and down the deck stairs any longer, her arthritis and other ailments make it hard for her to walk up and down. I decided to try a ramp, instead of me carrying her. I put a little thing together, laid down some indoor outdoor carpeting, and voila! a ramp was born. The first week I led her up and down with her leash, by the second week she was going down like a champ, but still had trouble with the up part. The third week, after putting her in the ramp on the ground and leading her up it, she got the idea. Now she is coming and going on her own, like the little smarty pants she is. She has reached her total BITCHdom, better late than never.
